2.0           Purpose

This policy ensures that students will have opportunity to enroll in required or desired courses and optimizes utilization of university facilities.

3.0           Definitions

"Definitions" in this document should be the definitions that are relevant to the policy, and are not already defined in the General Definitions of the policies.

3.1      Lab– 1 unit course taken for credit; linked to another course.

3.2      Recitation– 1 unit course taken for credit; linked to another course.

Per ABOR policy: At least fifteen (15) contact-hours of recitation, lecture, discussion, testing or evaluation, seminar, or colloquium, as well as a minimum of thirty (30) hours of student homework is required for each unit of credit; Laboratory courses require a minimum of forty–five (45) contact-hours per unit of credit.

4.0           Applicability

This policy applies to all credit-bearing university courses offered on the Flagstaff campus of Northern Arizona University. It is not applicable to courses that do not have meeting times, such as independent study. Nor is it applicable to captive cohort programs for which all students are taking a prescribed, integrated block of common courses that constitute their semester load. In such instances:

  • Students not in the program do not take the courses in question
  • Students in the program do not generally take courses outside the prescribed block

To the extent possible, IITV courses enrolling Flagstaff campus students should attempt to conform to this policy.
